I once had to tell a client something she didn't expect to hear.

She came to me eager, motivated, and ready to sign up. And I told her, honestly, with care, that coaching wasn't what she needed right now.

Not because she wasn't capable. Not because her goals weren't real. But because coaching only works when you're truly ready for it. And readiness isn't about wanting change. It's about being willing to own it.

In my years of coaching high-achieving professionals and rising leaders, I've seen one pattern over and over: the people who get the most out of coaching are the ones who come in with three things:

• Patience with the process

• Acknowledgement that they own their growth,

• Ability to open up

Everything else can be figured out together. But without those three, coaching becomes advice-seeking. And advice is not transformation.
